The Civil Society Department was established in 1992. Its principal objectives are: > To produce and disseminate knowledge about the diverse set of organizations that constitute part of the civil society. > To carry out programs that enhance the performance of these institutions in their own settings and in the strengthening of democracy. > To promote the deepening of of economic, social, and cultural rights. To this end, the department coordinates research activities, technical support, a graduate program, training, and dissemination activities.
