The Master’s
in Social Sciences and Health is the result of a joint venture by
two institutions with vast academic background: CEDES and the Facultad
Latinoamericana de Ciencias Sociales (FLACSO- Argentine branch).
The degrees are awarded by FLACSO.
The curricula fulfill the requirements of Resolution 1.186/97 of
the Ministry of Culture and Education in compliance with law 24.521.
It has been granted a “B” certification by the National
Commission of University Assessment and Accreditation (Resolution
310/99).
Master´s Program in Social Science and Health will not start its activities in 2008.

Objectives
To offer, from the social sciences, conceptual elements and methodological
tools to comprehend and contribute to the field of health/disease.
On completing the master’s program, participants will have
acquired the necessary skills to:
a) conduct research on the social, political, and economic conditionings
of health /disease process;
b) satisfy the demands of public and private health care institutions
and organizations and social security, which require technical support
for the design , management, or evaluation of policies, programs,
and projects;
c) teach in the fields of: public health, family medicine, social
sciences of health and related issues.

Students
The Master’s Program targets:
> officials in public health care and social security administrations;
> social scientists (sociologists, anthropologists, and economists);
> health care providers such as physicians, nurses, obstetricians
that seek to include into their medical practice, training in management,
teaching, intervention design as well as social, cultural and economic
dimensions of their environment;
> social workers and psychologists working in health care services;
> fellows and young researchers in distinct social sciences areas,
who seek a Ph.D.

Program and curricula of the Master’s
Program
The two-year Master’s Program is organized into six 12-week
terms. Classes are held on Fridays from 18:00 to 21:00 o’clock
and Saturdays from 9:00 to 12:00 o’clock.
The Master’s Program uses a credit system. Each credit corresponds
to 36 class hours. Students must complete two credits per term.
The completion of the Master’s Program requires a total of
fifteen credits.

On completing the coursework and approval of the thirteen credits,
together with an integrated evaluation of the participant, students
will receive the diploma of Degree in the Social Sciences
and Health. To obtain the Master’s Degree
in Social Sciences and Health, students must complete fifteen
credits and obtain the approval of the thesis.

Program admission
For admission to the Master’s Program, applicants must fulfill
the following requirements:
1. Hold a degree or equivalent level in one of
the social sciences, psychology, social work, or related fields;
or, in one of the health fields with a minimum four-year duration.
Exceptions will be considered for graduates of other fields or for
persons with suitable merit and background.
2. English reading ability
3. Applicants must complete the registration form,
and include: a curriculum vitae, a copy of the diploma and official
transcripts, two photographs, and a personal statement explaining
the motivations for participating. Two academic or professional
reference letters must also be sent under separate cover. Once the
application form has been presented, candidates residing in Argentina
will be called for an interview with the Academic Secretary.
Special consideration will be given to published or unpublished
work (including thesis or book chapters, monographs, or articles).

Libraries
Students, teachers, and specialized public of the Master’s
Program can take advantage of the comprehensive and computerized
libraries at FLACSO and CEDES. FLACSO’s Main Library has a
collection of over 12,000 volumes, specializing in the social sciences.
CEDES has a Specialized Library in Social Sciences and Health with
approximately 3,500 volumes and a wide range of national and international
journals.

Tuition fees
Annual registration costs $ 200 per year and eighteen monthly payments
of $ 300.
The Program is currently organizing financial aid to cover a part
of the tuition. Financial Aid applicants must attach a letter justifying
the request.
